  Overview on POPs

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) have been identified as chemical substances which are not only bioaccumulative but also persistent posing risk to health and the environment. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are organic compounds that include synthesized substances (pesticides and PCBs). Other substances are by-products generated as a result of human and natural activity, of which human activity accounts for the major proportion of releases (dioxins and furans). Extensive scientific researches have shown that POPs are some of the most dangerous pollutants released into the environment by humans. Among the twelve (12) POPs listed in the Stockholm Convention, nine of these are pesticides. These are: aldrin, chlordane, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor, hexachlorobenzene, mirex, and toxaphene.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) is undertaking and inventory of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) as part of the implementation of the Stockholm Convention which is under the umbrella project PHI/01/G32 Philippine Enabling Activity: Initial Assistance to the Philippines to Meet its Obligations under the Stockholm Convention on POPs.
