Ozone
Trivia
How
can individuals help in saving the ozone layer?
People can help save
the ozone layer by patronizing products and services that do not use ODS.
Here are some tips on how individials ca be ozone-friendly.
Mobile
air-conditioner (MAC) using HFC-134a as a refrigerant
-
Have
your CFC-12 MAC system serviced at DTI-accredited service shop by a
TESDA-certified technician
-
Never allow your
CFC-12 MAC system to be recharged without the technician locating and
repairing the leak.
-
Minimize leaks of
CFC-12 refrigerant by running your car air-conditioner for ten minutes
every week to ensure the seals are kept lubricated.
-
If your CFC-12 MAC
needs a major service, it may be cheaper in the long run to convert
it to HFC-134a MAC system
-
Do not release into
the air or vent any refrigerant from your CFC-12 MAC system.
-
Chemical suppliers
are advised not ot supply any CFC to the MAC manufacturing sector.
-
Make sure that your
HFC-134a MAC system is servied at an accredited servie center by a trained
technician to avoid unscrupulous practice of topping up your MAC with
CFC-12 and being charged for the price of HFC-134a refrigerant.
-
Make sure that your
HFC-134a MAC is not refilled with CFC-12 refrigerant because it will
reduce the lifespan of your HFC-134a MAC compressor drastically or damage
the MAC system due to unsuitability of the combination of CFC-12 refrigerant
with the PAG oil used in the HFC-134a MAC system.
-
Make sure that you
are aware of other ill parctices in the servicing sector.
Commercial
and Domestic refrigerators
-
Do not purchase
any commercial or domestic refrigerator that uses CFC as a refrigerant.
You may face the problem of lack of refrigerant supply when CFC is totally
phased out in the near future.
-
Should your refrigerator
need to be serviced, make sure it is done by a trained technician in
an accredited service center that is equipped with the refrigerant recovery
and recycing machine.
-
Do not vent any refrigerant
from your refrigerator.
-
Chemical suppliers
are advised not to supply any CFC to the commercial and domestic refrigerator
manufacturing sector.

Chillers
-
Chillers must be equipped
with refrigerant reclamation devices to prevent venting of refrigerant.
-
CFC chiller owners are
encouraged to change to more energy-efficient chillers as is it has been
proven to be more economical and energy saving.
-
Chemical suppliers are
advised not to supply any CFC to the chiller refrigerator manufacturing
sector.
Foams
-
Do not purchase or use
any foam that has been produced using CFC as a blowing agent.
-
Do not use CFC as a
blowing agent in foam manufacturing
-
Chemical supplier are
advised not to sell any CFCs to the foam manufacturing sector.
Solvents
-
Do not CFCs as solvents
in the production process
-
Convert the usage of
CFCs to other ozone-friendly alternatives.
-
Chemical ssupplier are
advised not to supply any CFC to industries using CFCs as solvents in
the production in the production processes.
Aerosols
- Do not use or purchase earosols that contain
CFCs as propellants.
- Do not sell aerosols that contain CFCs
as propellants.
- Do not manufacture earosols that use CFCs
as propellants.
- Chemical suppliers are advised not to supply
any CFC to the aerosol manufacuring sector.

is used as a transitional substance, necessary as an available replacement for
CFC. Total CFC phaseout is in the year 2010, while total HCFC phaseout is in
the year 2040.
