Lawrence Medina and Paulo Miguel Manzanilla, fourth year students from the Philippine Science High School, bag the grand prize in the two-day Asia-Pacific Ozone Quiz Competition held in Bangkok, Thailand on August 20 and 21, 2007. Sixteen countries battled to win the first prize of US$1,500, trophies and a trip to Montreal, Canada to represent the Asia-Pacific region in the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol in Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer on September 16, 2007.

The US$1500 will be divided into two: US$750 will be for the two students and US$750 for an environmental project in their school. Sri Lanka and Thailand got the second and third prizes, respectively.

The 16 countries that joined the competition were Afghanistan,

Brunei, Cambodia, China, Fiji, Indonesia, Iran, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

The quiz was organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. The coverage of the competition were Ozone Science, the Montreal Protocol and other related multilateral environmental agreements and who’s who in the field of ozone layer protection. The Montreal Protocol signed in September 16, 1987 is an international agreement among 191 countries where they committed to gradually reduce and eventually eliminate production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) that destroy the earth’s protective ozone layer in the atmosphere and put all living things in danger.

Medina and Manzanilla were chosen to represent the country through a national online quiz conducted on May 28, 2007 organized by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Our Regional Ozone Quiz Competition champs met the President, Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on September 4, 2007.
